Mexican Independence Day
September 16th is celebrated as a national holiday in Mexico on account of the happenings that day in 1810. It was on that morning in the town of Dolores Hidalgo that the Catholic priest Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla helped free imprisoned supporters of Mexican independence from Spain and then rallied support to the cause in his “Cry of Dolores” (Grito de Dolores) speech before the Our Lady of Sorrows church. This is widely considered the opening of the Mexican War of Independence, as Hidalgo mustered armed forces and marched on Mexico City.
Hidalgo’s revolt was ultimately crushed and the priest himself among those executed the following year, but the revolutionary movement continued, and, in August 1821, Mexico won its sovereignty from Spain with the signing of the Treaty of Córdoba.
The anniversary of Hidalgo’s Cry of Dolores was unofficially marked as early as a couple of years after its issue and had its first observance as a national holiday in 1825. On September 15th, the night before Independence Day, the President of Mexico rings the very bell Hidalgo did in 1810 to gather a crowd for his speech—it now occupies the National Palace in Mexico City, where this symbolic reenactment takes place—and delivers a patriotic address inspired by the Cry of Dolores.
